Johnny Cash video HURT

"I expect my life to end pretty soon. You know, I'm 71 years old. I have great faith, though. I have unshakeable faith." Despite all the ups and way-downs of his long life, Johnny Cash says he has no regrets. "I used to," he says, "But I forgave myself. When God forgave me, I figured I'd better do it, too." (Source)

I really like this video from the late and great Johnny Cash. It is sad, but beautiful. Especially these words stuck with me:

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

The words are truly striking, chilling even. I liked the original NiN version but when sung by Mr. Cash, it takes on a whole new meaning for me.

Hi Art,
I don't know about NiN - I did read that this is originaly their song, but I don't know their music at all. I just read in Wikipedia about them, also about the meaning of their name, possibly referring to the nails that were used for Jesus' crucifixion. I don't know whether that is a good or a bad thing, maybe they just wanted to have a cool name. The lyrics of HURT are great. Dark, but very intriguing. Thanks for reading my blog and for leaving comments - I really appreciate that.

Hey Paul, i'm a HUGE Cash fan! You should also check out the video of 'God's Gonna Cut You Down', a song that was brought out after his death and in which a lot of famous artists are paying tribute to the Man In Black. You can watch it on youtube.

Yes, Daniel - you are right! I've seen that video on YouTube and it is great. First I heard the song on the radio while driving in my car. I guess I need more cash to buy more cd's... Last month I bought My Mothers Hymn Book - I just love it. Thanks for your comment.
I also like Bruce Springsteen's cd with Pete Seeger songs (We Shall Overcome) and I've heard that Bob Dylan's latest cd is also great. I don't buy all the cd's of artists I like - just can't afford to - but every now and then you must give yourself a present. That's my opinion ;-)

I totally agree with you on your last statement on giving yourself a present now and then!
Seems we have a similar taste of music!

Yes, Hurt is absolutely haunting. I grew up listening to NiN as an angst-ridden teenager, and agree with Art that the Cash rendition brings a whole new dimension out in the song.
