Whose shoes?

Forget global warming and melting ice caps - blame Al Gore for bringing us the bad news. This is also a serious issue that needs to be solved urgently: Whose Shoes Are These? (Click pic to enlarge)

We all know that apples grow on apple trees and strawberries can be picked from bushes, but nobody ever told me that sneakers come from traffic lights. I see these shoes every morning when I drive to my office and I can't help myself: I need to know whose shoes these are and why they are dangling here. Any suggestions?

Hey Paul, thanks for letting me know about the urband legend truth about the lincoln/kennedy... history thingy. I should have checked it out. I did wonder if it were accurate but got sloppy.

I love it when people get factual and clear things up.

Sorry it took so long to reply, I was gone and hadn't checked back to past posts.

When we lived in Texas, there was a strange little, but always crowded, restaurant that we liked. It was written up in a couple of newspapers years ago because of the huge shoe tree behind the restaurant. No one knows who exactly threw the first pair of shoes up there, but when we moved away nine years ago, there were a couple of hundred pairs hanging in the tree!

(As you can guess, the restaurant was fairly near a college, and was very popular with the students!)

Thirty years ago, when I was in junior high school, it was a fad for teenagers to tie the laces together on their old athletic shoes and then sling them up over a telephone line. If you did it just right, they spun around and stayed on the line till the laces rotted off or a city utility crew eventually removed them. They often stayed up for months or years. Fortunately, the fad passed, and I haven't seen this thing done since the 1970s. Maybe der Nederlanden have been spared the fad till now.
